2007 Clinic Schedule
DAY ONE
8:00 - 8:30 a.m. Registration
Part I: For Coaches and Athletes
- Welcome & introductory remarks
- General session for all age groups and hurdle distances
- Hurdle heights & distances.
- Differences between Youth Athletics & UIL Regulations.
- Break up into age groups
- Parent and coaches interaction with athletes and coordinators.
- Fundamental hurdle drills: basic and hurdle -specific warm-up drills and stretches.
Part II: Especially For Coaches
- Tackling safety and fear of the event issues
- Basic hurdle work-out strategies
- What kind of athletes make good hurdlers:body type, etc.
- Knowing When and When Not to Contiune Hurdle Workouts
- Question and Answer Session
DAY TWO
In this session athletes will learn fundamental hurdle drills including, lead leg and trail leg, drills, proper hurdle clearance, and preparation for hurdle clearance, starts and much more.
- Working on control/ composure
- Body positions
- Foot placement
- To block or not to block
- Sighting the hurdles
- Running between the hurdles
- Hurdle clearance
- Race Focus
- Starts - proper foot placement- which leg should be up or back, & getting to the first hurdle.
DAY THREE
Part I
- Review of Hurdle Drills & Workouts
- Individual critiques
Part II: Mock Competition
During this final session, each age groups will participate in an actual hurdle race, or if the coaches believe that this would not be practical, each participant will demonstrate what he or she has learned. Each group will watch the other group work on the event. This will help them gain knowledge of the next stage or level they will be going to or have left and will also serve as a check mark of improvement.
